ABSTRACT
Osteoporosis Is A Medical Condition Characterized By Low Bone Density And Micro-architectural Deterioration Of Bone. Antiresorptive Drugs And Estrogens Are Considered The Common Traditional Therapy For Post-menopausal Osteoporosis.

Aim: The Aim Of This Study Was To Evaluate The Action Of Red Clover And Chickpea On The Alterations Of The Mandibular Alveolar Bone And Periodontal Ligaments Induced By Ovariectomy In Albino Rats. Methods: 35 Adult Female Albino Rats Were Divided Into 5 Groups Each Of 7 Rats: The Negative Control Group (group I) That Were Only Subjected To Sham Operation And Did Not Receive Any Intervention, The Positive Control Group (group II) That Were Subjected To Ovariectomy Without Any Treatment, The Alendronate Sodium (bisphosphonate) Experimental Group (group III) That Were Subjected To Ovariectomy And Received Fosamax Daily For 3 Months One Month Postoperative, The Chickpea Experimental Group (group IV) That Were Subjected To Ovariectomy And Received Chickpea Extract Daily For 3 Months One Month Postoperative. And The Red Clover Experimental Group (group V) That Were Subjected To Ovariectomy And Received Red Clover Extract Daily For 3 Months One Month Postoperative. After Rats Were Terminated, Mandibular Molar Regions Were Excised And Stained For H&E Stain And Anti-fibronectin (FN) Immunohistochemical Stain. Specimens Were Also Examined For Bone Mineral Density (BMD).

Results: Histological And Immunohistochemical Examination Showed Inflammatory Reaction In Alveolar Bone And Oblique Fibers That Decreased Over The Course Of Treatment With Phytoestrogens. Statistical Results Showed That There Was No Significant Difference Between Phytoestrogens And Alendronate Sodium Drug (bisphosphonate) And There Was A Significant Difference Between Group II And All Experimental Treated Groups As Well As Between Group I And Experimental Treated Groups. Conclusion: Alternative Hormone Replacement Therapy Using Phytoestrogens Was Associated With Variable Grades Of Statistically Significant Reduction Of Osteoporosis And Periodontitis.
